Food Standard Agency Confirm Food Hygiene is a Major Concern when Eating Out
The FSA’s latest public attitudes tracker shows that the main food safety issue people continue to be concerned about is food hygiene when eating out.
To help reduce the public’s concerns, the FSA and many Local Authorities have introduced food hygiene rating schemes, these schemes go under many different names, but the three most common are the FSA’s “Food Hygiene Rating Scheme”, the Scottish FSA’s “Food Hygiene Information Scheme” and other adopted schemes such as “Scores on the Doors” run by local authorities.
All of the schemes encourage businesses to improve hygiene standards and reduce the incidence of foodborne illness. The schemes help consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving them information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels and food shops.
The FSA’s tracker survey confirmed that more of the public are now aware of these schemes and take notice of the ratings awarded. The awards given by enforcement authorities are not only displayed in food business windows but also posted on the FSA and Local Authority websites.
It is therefore important not just to be concerned about your reputation, the appearance of your premises and staff but also hygiene certificates and food hygiene rating stickers. It is now even more important that food businesses achieve the top rating in these hygiene schemes, especially when other traders in their area are proudly displaying their award.
Don’t leave any stone unturned when seeking a top award:
• If you have not yet been rated contact RSA Environmental Health, we will help you put in place the key requirements to achieve the top award.
• If you have been rated and are not happy with the outcome, there is normally a period of grace or an appeal process, in which you can put things right before a follow up unannounced inspection is made to confirm the findings. Don’t delay – speak to our advisors today.
• If you have been rated, failed to achieve a top award and the re-inspection has already passed then seek our help to build strong management procedures that will help meet the awards standards for the future. Be aware that once a rating is fixed it can stay with you until the enforcement officer inspects you again, in 18months or 3 years time.
The main reasons a well run food business with immaculate premises fails to achieve a top award is paperwork. All of the scoring schemes are heavily weighted towards written management systems and records, failure in paperwork systems will prevent you achieving the top awards. Food management systems such as HACCP are our speciality, let RSA sought your paperwork, records and training before your inspection takes place.
